File Share Migrations

Over time, file shares become a dumping ground for documents, making it challenging for your employees to find what they're looking for.

We can help your organization shift from relying on file shares into using Microsoft 365. This will modernize the way your organization collaborates on documents. We strongly discourage just fork-lifting the existing structure of the file share into a SharePoint library as painful as it may be, this is the time to do some serious house cleaning.

File shares come in two common forms, those are:

  • Personal Drives
    • Where each user has their own private folder to keep their own content in
    • These are migrated into users’ OneDrive libraries, where each Microsoft 365 user gets 1 TB of private storage
  • Organizational File Shares
    • Where organizational departments have common folders for their documents
    • With a new information architecture defined, these migrate into a Teams-centric set of SharePoint site collections and folders that correspond to organizational, departmental, and project Teams and Channels

Your first step to a successful migration is to understand your current state. You can do this by engaging with Envision IT to run our Inventory Scripts and build out an inventory Power BI report which will allow you to make actionable decisions on what documents to migrate, delete, or archive.
