Session - Alternative SharePoint App Approaches

The SharePoint App model has not been well received. It is complex not only to build in, but also to deploy through a dev/test/prod lifecycle. For most business applications, the complexity is not needed.

In this session we will look at alternatives to both the SharePoint hosted and provider hosted model. We'll start with the decision process to build one or the other, whether it is a traditional SharePoint app or an alternative model. The key points we'll consider is do we need code to run in a trusted environment (which client JavaScript isn't), and do we need to access resources outside of SharePoint (like LOB systems).

The alternative model we'll focus on is built on client-side presentation code talking to REST APIs on the back end. These could be OOTB Office 365 or SharePoint on premises APIs (in an approach similar to SharePoint hosted apps) or custom built Visual Studio Web APIs (more like a provider hosted app).

Benefits

  • Learn a simplified approach for building business applications and electronic forms
  • Understand what to put in client side code and what should be in back-end APIs
  • Build rich, mobile friendly apps and forms with standard open source tools
